A recent visit to the Adelaide Gaol made for an interesting excursion. It is one of the oldest public buildings in our state. Built in 1841 and housed approximately 300,000 prisoners during its 147 years of operation. The Gaol was closed in 1988 and is known as the longest continuously operating prison in Australia.
The bleak, oppressive mood still hangs in the air. Heavy bolts and locks. This place of incarceration
and executions
holds a melancholy beauty.

We took our boys there years ago. The youngest was petrified of the cells and didn't let go of my hand the whole time we were inside the building. It is such a sad place.
We really enjoyed our visit there. (Some time ago now) Some of our kids had done a guided tour with a youth group and liked it so much they wanted to go again. We did the self guided tour which was excellent. So interesting and sad too. Your photos are excellent.
Happy New Year!!
a little gem of history right there - sounds like an interesting day out at a jail - i found Alkatraz in SanFrancisco very eerrie but SO interesting!
i love old buildings and architecture, ..recently they opened up many buildings in Sydney that were never allowed public access...i was a little upset that I couldnt go that weekend as we already had something planned! would have been awesome!
We have been to the Melbourne Gaol. What an eerie feeling. A shiver down the spine. But an important part of our history.
Your photos capture the atmosphere so well-I actually have never been there. Happy New Year to you and yours:)
eek, not sure if I am brave enough to go to the old gaol but find it so fascinating.
Funny you should post about this, my ranger boy has special access to the gaol, something to do with government buildings...? and we were considering going soon. I'll have nightmares after I just know I will.
